These Fiber Fill Tatami Mats feature the luxuriant comfort of classical Japanese Washitsu style with a modern twist. Traditional baked rice straw fill is eschewed in favor of a high-density fiberboard. As a result, these hypoallergenic mats do not have the traditional scent associated with classic Tatami flooring, and are lighter weight as well. In the Heian period, Tatami mats were considered items of the highest luxury, only available to the most exalted aristocrats. Today, Tatami mats are available to everyone: They can be found in residences, restaurants, temples and tea houses.
