Description:
When to Plant Direct Sowing: Plant outdoors a week or so before your region's last frost date. Starting Indoors: Start seeds indoors approximately 9 weeks before the final frost, and transplant outdoors 2-3 weeks afterward. Where to Plant Sunlight: Full sun is best (at least 6 hours daily) but hollyhocks will tolerate some light shade. Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil. Amend with compost if needed. Wind Protection: Choose a sheltered location or provide staking support to prevent wind damage to their tall stalks. Black Walnut Tolerance: Hollyhocks are one of the few plants tolerant of juglone, a chemical produced by black walnut trees. Planting Instructions Seed Preparation (Optional): Soaking seeds in warm water for 12 hours can improve germination rates, but it's not essential. Direct Sowing: Sow seeds on the soil surface; don't bury them as they need light to germinate. Gently press them into the soil. Space seeds about 2 feet apart. Water lightly and keep the soil moist. Starting Indoors: Use tall, individual pots to accommodate the deep taproots. Fill with seed-starting mix or well-draining potting soil. Sow seeds on the surface, gently press in, and lightly cover with soil. Place in a warm, bright location. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Germination: Expect germination in 1-3 weeks. Thinning: Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin them down to the strongest plant per spot, maintaining the 2-foot spacing.
