TIPS & TRICKS - Aerating should be a part of regular lawn maintenance. For most lawns, aerating once a year is sufficient. However, lawns with heavy foot traffic or clay soil might benefit from bi-annual aeration. - Aerating is most effective when the lawn is growing actively. For cool-season grasses, early spring or early fall are ideal times. For warm-season grasses, late spring through early summer is best. - Avoid aerating when the soil is overly wet or extremely dry. In very wet conditions, the aerator can get clogged easily, and in dry conditions, it might be hard to penetrate the soil. - A day before aerating, water your lawn thoroughly. This softens the soil, making it easier for the aerator to penetrate and remove cores effectively. - Before starting, mark the locations of sprinkler heads, hidden objects, and shallow utility lines to avoid damaging them. - Inspect your Weasel® Core Aerator and ensure the tines are sharp and in good condition. - Always be sure to stand upright, and hold the handle securely before placing your foot in the stirrup of your Weasel® Core Aerator. Use force from your legs to push down on the aerator, rather than engaging your back; this will reduce stress on joints and muscles, and generally make the process of aeration easier on your body. - Make sure to overlap passes with the aerator to ensure thorough coverage. This is especially important in areas with compacted soil. Also try to maintain a consistent pattern and depth as you aerate. This uniformity ensures that all parts of the lawn receive the same treatment. - After aerating, leave the soil cores on the lawn. They will break down and return nutrients to the soil. If they are particularly unsightly, you can break them up by mowing or using a rake. - Immediately after aerating is a great time to overseed and fertilize your lawn. The open soil is ideal for seed germination, and the fertilizer will reach deeper into the soil.
